WHAT IT IS

Structure Is Not an Org Chart.
It Is an Engineering Problem.

Business Architecture Design is KDE's capability for organizations whose structure has become misaligned with their strategy, their scale, or their operating environment. It goes far beyond org chart redesign — addressing the full architectural stack of people, process, technology, information, and governance as an integrated system.

Every organization has an architecture — whether it was deliberately designed or not. The question is whether that architecture enables or constrains performance. KDE's role is to diagnose the current architecture honestly, design a target architecture that supports the organization's strategic intent, and manage the transition between the two.

The result is an organization whose structure, processes, and systems are aligned into a coherent whole — capable of executing strategy, absorbing growth, and sustaining performance over time.

"Structure follows strategy — or it should. When the two are misaligned, the organization spends more energy managing the gap than it spends pursuing the goal."

— Katlego Mabote, Founder & Principal, KDE

WHAT WE DO

Six Services Across the
Full Architecture Stack.

KDE's Business Architecture Design work spans the full architecture lifecycle — from diagnostic assessment through to implemented redesign and transition management.

Architecture Diagnostic

A structured assessment of the current architecture across all five layers — identifying misalignments, structural constraints, capability gaps, and the specific architectural changes that would produce the greatest performance improvement.

Target Architecture Design

Design of the future-state architecture — the structural blueprint that aligns people, process, technology, and information to the organization's strategic intent and performance requirements.

Organisational Design

Redesign of the organizational structure — spans, layers, functions, reporting lines, and governance mechanisms — to align with the strategy and eliminate structural drag on performance.

Capability Architecture Mapping

Mapping the capabilities the organization needs to execute its strategy against the capabilities it currently has — identifying gaps, redundancies, and the build/buy/partner decisions required to close them.

Transition Architecture & Roadmap

Ongoing governance support for active transformation programmes — stage-gate reviews, escalation management, benefits tracking, and independent assurance that programmes are on track to deliver.

Architecture Governance

Establishing the governance principles and decision rights that ensure the architecture remains aligned as the organization evolves — preventing structural drift back toward the old model.

WHAT YOU GET

A Structural Blueprint
Built for Performance.

A KDE Business Architecture Design engagement produces a comprehensive architectural package — the documented foundation your organization needs to implement structural change with confidence and precision.

Architecture Assessment Report

A full diagnostic of the current architecture — misalignments, structural constraints, capability gaps, and performance costs — documented across all five architecture layers.

Target Architecture Blueprint

The future-state architecture design — covering organizational structure, process architecture, capability model, information flows, and technology alignment — in a single, integrated document.

Capability

Architecture Map

A full map of current vs. required capabilities — with gap analysis, build/buy/partner recommendations, and a capability development roadmap.

Organisational Design Package

New org structure, role architecture, governance model, and accountability framework — ready for communication to the organization and implementation by leadership.

WHO IT'S FOR

This Capability Is Right for You If…

Business Architecture Design delivers the most value at specific inflection points in an organization's life. These are the situations where the need for structural redesign is most acute.

01

Strategy has changed but structure hasn't

A new strategy has been defined — a new market, a new model, a new value proposition. But the organization is still structured for the old strategy. The result is that the new strategy is being executed by an architecture that was designed for something else entirely.

03

A merger, acquisition, or restructuring has created architectural chaos

Two organizations have been combined — but their processes, systems, and structures haven't been integrated into a coherent whole. The result is duplication, confusion, and a performance gap that grows wider the longer the architectural integration is deferred.

03

02

The organization has grown faster than its structure can support

What worked at 100 people is breaking at 500. Decision-making is slow. Accountability is unclear. Functions are duplicating effort. The organization needs a deliberate structural redesign — not more headcount or more hierarchy.

04

Technology investment is not producing expected returns

Significant technology has been deployed — ERP, CRM, analytics platforms. But the expected performance improvements haven't materialized. The problem is usually architectural: the technology doesn't fit the process, or the process doesn't fit the structure, or all three are misaligned with the strategy.
